also guys on seem to like AB165 circuit best? mod ideas.īlackface Tremolux and BandMaster are identical except for solid state VS tube rectifier. Check out Carvin, they now have two cool 4 ohm ext. Try it, it works! Also, Bassman heads are 4 ohms, so a 4 ohm cab will give you a cleaner sound, an 8 ohm cab will distort a little sooner. Thick, short wire is good for bass, but long lengths of thinner wire give more chime & jangle. Ken Fischer (Trainwreck Amps) suggests using 20' of 18 or 20 guage speaker wire. Here is some info I found on the note that I skipped most of the posts where people said they liked the bassman more than the bandmaster, probably because I've decided on the bandmaster:

It's a different animal though, more like a Super Reverb. I have a 69 Bandmaster Reverb which I love.

I never played a plain bandmaster head myself. The bandmaster and tremolux have more holes in the chassis, I think they even have a hole punched for a tube rectifier, which could be interesting, mod-wise. The smaller OT does not make the other amps worse, they were just designed differently. It will give you more headroom to begin with, and when it breaks up, it will give you more roar. The bassman has a larger output transformer than the tremolux and bandmaster, which is a good thing. Some people swear by a hybrid, with the AB165 preamp + AA864 power amp. Some of the CBS-changes aren't even considered as a deterioration of the amp. Those AB165 are not screwy at all as is but can be easily "blackfaced" to earlier Bf bassman specs (AA864). The bassman was the first amp CBS started messing with, even under blackface cosmetics. Those early silverface bassmen ('68-'69) are the same as the late blackfaces. I don't think it has more treble than the bassman, the BM probably just has more bass. Personally, the tremolux would be my first choice. I'm sure others more knowledgeable than me will chime in. I can't answer them all, but I'll give you my 2 cents. they also might sound better? the hot rod has a nice clean sound but it's perhaps a bit too middy and too much bass, barely enough treble at low volumes, haven't cranked one. I was thinking of buying a hot rod deluxe, but these fender heads are the same price and I'm guessing will last longer and be more reliable. Here's a funny thing: I was thinking an AC30 was my dream amp, but I played a reissue and the fenders seemed to be just as sweet sounding, even perhaps a tad more (!), which was a pleasant surprise because of cost, weight, and construction (P2P vs PCB) What are fair prices on these? i've seen a lot for 400-500, though the folks who write HC review seem to be paying a bit less than this in general :-/ How do the early silverface bassmans (68, 69) sound compared to the blackfaces? too trebly or something? is the CBS SF circuit really "dreaded"?

Here's a thing I found on the net: is this a reliable way to find out if a 68 SF has the BF or SF circuit? or is there another way to tell?: the 30 watt silvertone is even a bit loud for me, and I've read that bassmans are plenty loudĭo they sound very different when cranked? one thing i read is that the bandmaster is a little less toneful than the bassman when cranked due to it's smaller transformer and one less gain stage or something?

#BANDMASTER HEAD PLUS#

I don't want a showman because my cab can handle 70 watts at most I think, plus I don't want to kill my ears. i'm looking for clean headroom, do any of these break up earlier than others? Here's the wattage tremolux 35, bandmaster 40, bassman 50. I'm curious, are the circuits very different on these three amps? the tremolux seemed to have more treble than the bandmaster. does the earlier one have vertical black lines framing the "bassman" script or something? How can you tell the difference between a 68 and 69 bassman? both have the silver border around the grille. does it have an equally sweet clean sound? I'm going to try out a 68/69 in a few weeks that I might buy if I like it. the bassman I played was all ****ed up so I couldn't tell. although judging from the bandmaster and tremolux i played the other day, the silvertone might very well become the backup. I'm looking for a backup head for my silvertone twin twelve. Um, i'm curious to know if anyone has tried all three of these heads.
